Rogers Park Golf Course listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Presentation to by held at Tampa Sports Authority Board meeting on Monday, July 27
TAMPA, Fla. – July 23, 2015 – The State of Florida has recognized Rogers Park Golf Course by listing it on the National Register of Historic Places. This milestone will be recognized during the regular board meeting of the Tampa Sports Authority at 4:00 PM on July 27th, 2015. The meeting will be held in the boardroom of the Authority offices located at 4201 North Dale Mabry Highway (south end of Raymond James Stadium).
The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archaeological resources. For more information, go to http://www.floridatrust.org/news-events/national-register-of-historic-places-2014-florida-additions.
Rogers Park Golf Course, built in 1952, has evolved as one of Tampa, Florida's best-kept secrets. The beautiful 18-hole golf facility is steeped in history and rich in heritage. During the days of segregation, Rogers Park was the only picnic area for the African-American community in Tampa. The park took the name of its contributor, G.D. Rogers. Mayor Curtis Hixon gave permission to a group of local golfers to build a 9-hole golf course. The first Head Golf Professional, Willie Black, directed his group of volunteers, and with meticulous care, all of the tree removal and shaping was done by hand. Upon its completion in 1952, the Rogers Park Golf Club was born.
In 1976, the City of Tampa gave management rights to the newly formed Tampa Sports Authority, and a $400,000 renovation project began. In 2000, the Tampa Sports Authority decided that a $4 million renovation was needed. An array of other landscaping and reshaping of holes was added to enhance the character of Rogers Park Golf Course, and in 2001, a new maintenance compound was completed and followed by a new clubhouse in 2002.
The Tampa Sports Authority is the manager of Raymond James Stadium and three city golf courses as well as the landlord for George Steinbrenner Field and the Amalie Arena. For more information, go to www.tampasportsauthority.com.

Congratulations to Eric Hart, CFE, recipient of the 2015 Ray W. Ward Award, presented by the Regents of the Venue Management School(VMS) at Oglebay (which began 29 years ago with the generous support of the IAVM Foundation). The announcement was made by Regents Chair Michael Marion and was presented at the graduation banquet on June 11.
“I am honored and humbled by being named the recipient of this year’s Ray Ward Award,” said Hart, president and CEO of the Tampa Sports Authority. “Ray’s legacy with VMS is legendary, a person who has been a mentor to me since I become involved with the school. To receive the award named for this icon is the greatest recognition I could ever imagine.”
The award recognizes an individual associated with VMS whose dedicated service and extraordinary contributions over a period of at least six years have resulted in significant and long lasting improvements to the overall success and quality of the school. The award was created and initially presented to Ward in August 1996.
“I’ve known Eric for many years, and his recognition is especially satisfying,” Ward said. “He has served in many capacities, all of which benefited the school, including as Regents Chair. He has served well, with great enthusiasm and has focused his considerable abilities and energy on expanding and improving all of the elements of the school.”

OUTBACK BOWL UNVEILS COMMEMORATIVE LOGO TO
CELEBRATE 30th ANNIVERSARY
Tampa, FL – Outback Bowl officials today unveiled a commemorative logo that will be used over the next ten months as the popular college football bowl celebrates its 30th Anniversary game in Tampa. The New Year’s Day Bowl matches teams from the SEC and Big Ten Conference. It was first played in December of 1986 as the Hall of Fame Bowl and later became the Outback Bowl with the signing of Outback Steakhouse as its title sponsor in 1995.
“We are proud to announce that this year’s game will be the thirty-year anniversary of the Outback Bowl in the Tampa Bay community,” said Outback Bowl President / CEO Jim McVay. “Our commemorative anniversary logo is a great reminder of the many contributions the Outback Bowl has made to our region over three decades including over one billion dollars in economic impact, hundreds-of-millions in national and international exposure, and one hundred twenty-three million dollars contributed to universities. And we are properly positioned with our agreements with the SEC and Big Ten conferences, our twenty-year title sponsor Outback Steakhouse, and our network TV partner ESPN to continue to make significant contributions to the Tampa Bay area as we move forward.”
The Outback Bowl will be held on Friday, January 1, 2016 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. For information on ordering priority membership seats for the 2016 Outback Bowl call (813) 874-BOWL or go to the “Ticket Packages” link on the bowl web site at www.outbackbowl.com for details.
